Post-OP Instructions

  • COLD PACKS must be applied to the area of the surgery in 10-15 minutes intervals for the first 24 hours to prevent swelling and discomfort. After this, moist heat maybe helpful to reduce swelling that may have occurred.

  • PAIN MEDICATIONS such as ADVIL (600-800 mg) or Regular-Strength TYLENOL every 5-6 hours for the first 3-4 days post surgery should be used to control the discomfort. You could also alternate the two NSIDS every 3-4 hours for more profound pain control. Should a stronger pain medication (narcotic) be advised, please have the prescription filled and follow the directions. Please be aware of the side-effects associated with the narcotic pain medication.

  • ORAL HYGIENE should be resumed for the rest of the mouth, EXCEPT THE SURGICAL SITE. Brushing the teeth in the other area of the mouth with toothpaste will probably give your mouth a sufficiently fresh feeling. Please, wait 30 minutes after flossing and brushing before you use the prescribed antimicrobial mouthwash. A 0.2% Chlorhexidine antimicrobial rinse should be used 2-3 times a day, as directed, during the healing phase. Rinsing after brushing or with the mouthwash should not be vigorous.

  • After the anesthetic effect has worn off, a DIET of semi-soft consistency is Avoid chewing on the side where the surgery was performed. Drink fluids frequently during the first 48 hours and eat a well-balanced meal. Multi-vitamins can be taken daily until you return to your own nutritious daily diet.

  • You may maintain light activity. AVOID SMOKING, AS IT WILL DELAY HEALING, AND AVOID ALCOHOLIC BEVEAGES IF YOU ARE TAKING PRESCRIBED PAIN MEDICATION.

  • Although BLEEDING is controlled and suturing has stabilized the wound, occasional bloodstain in the saliva for the next 4-5 days is not unusual. If there is persistent bleeding, you may control it by applying pressure. Slightly moisten a few gauze squares, or clean tissue paper, with cold water, drape them over the teeth, and using your thumb and index finger, apply pressure to both sides for 10-15 minutes. Repeat the procedure a second time and if bleeding is not stopped, contact the doctor.

  • Occasionally, a protective PERIODONTAL DRESSING is applied to the surgical area to keep you comfortable. If the dressing becomes loose, DON'T ADJUST IT; let it fall out! If you have no discomfort, remember not to disturb the area and just continue with the antimicrobial rinse; otherwise please call.

  • In case of any problems or concerns, please contact us.
